As many as 56,000 police officials and their families in Kerala are expected to benefit from a medical insurance scheme covering injuries and death in the line of duty.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala told the Assembly on Thursday that the scheme, with an annual premium of Rs.20 crore, would be implemented by the United India Insurance Company. The family of each police personnel, including spouse and dependent children, would be insured for a sum of Rs.200,000.

The scheme includes a buffer sum of Rs.1 crore to cover the treatment of injuries suffered in accidents, police action or encounter with a violent mob, and another buffer sum of Rs.50 lakh for critical illness. Treatment at government Ayurvedic hospitals is also covered under the scheme.
