Ahead of assembly polls in Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led government has announced an insurance scheme named Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY).

Implementation of this scheme was in limbo for the past one year in Haryana as the finance department had maintained that the state already had Rajiv Gandhi Parivar Bima Yojna for the same purpose.

AABY covers rural landless families and urban households below the poverty line or marginally above the poverty line. The scheme provides cover for the head of the family or an earning member of the families in rural and urban areas. It covers persons aged between 18 and 59 years for natural and accidental death and partial/permanent disability. Annual premium payable per member is Rs 200, of which 50% is paid by the Centre and remaining by the state government.

Under this scheme, an insurance cover of Rs 30,000 would be provided for natural death whereas Rs 75,000 would be given in case of death and permanent total disability in an accident.
